FROM PORTSIDE
Portside (the left side in nautical parlance) is a
news, discussion and debate service of the Committees
of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism. It
says it aims to provide varied material of interest to people
on the Left. Heretofore , we were  under the impression that Portside  is the Internet's voice of the Left.  But it turns out to be the Internet's voice of the fundamentalist Far-Left, which, like all fundamentalist organizations, adheres to an orthodoxy and consequently refuses to post dissident or differing opinions from within the Left---such as HATE YOUR GOVERNMENT BUT LOVE YOUR COUNTRY, available to be read in SECTION ONE of COLUMN SEVENTY.  Fundamentalists, like fascists, will not tolerate any disagreements or variations from the fundamentalist orthodoxy.

The Greens made an articulate case against lesser-evilism when they ran Ralph Nader, but how is this McGaa better than Wellstone?  He doesn't even have Green politics! I really don't understand what the Greens think they are doing: even in their own terms, this candidacy offers nothing positive: no party-building, no possibility of putting forward their own ideas, of showing up the narrowness of the two-party system.  If Wellstone loses because of them, who will be better off? Neither the Dems nor the Greens. Only the Republicans. Can anyone enlighten me?

Greens Go Nuts- Nominate opponent to Wellstone

From: Nathan Newman

Walking into the twilight zone of political insanity, (see http://www.commondreams.org/views02/0525-09.htm), the Green Party has decided to run a candidate in Minnesota against Paul Wellstone , the most progressive guy  in the Senate who is in the fight for his life this fall. When Nader ran, the Greens at least had the argument that they were trying to create a threat to force the Dems to articulate a progressive agenda.

But in Minnesota, just to run a candidate, any candidate, they have nominated Ed McGaa who even the Greens are not sure even supports the Green Party platform.  While there is some grumbling against Wellstone for his response after Sept 11, McGaa actually supports the war on terrorism and his proud of his 110 combat missions in Vietnam.

And he has engaged in nasty canards of anti-DSemitism in arguing that Wellstone is  "more loyal to Israel than he is to the United States."

The Greens argued that they differed from progressive Democrats in that they would create an organization that could consistently elect good candidates. What Minnesota shows is all they have created is an organization bent on nominating spoiler candidates, whatever their politics.

Wellstone campaign etc

From: Hunter Gray hunterbadbear@earthlink.net

I have only a brief comment on the Paul Wellstone campaign " and related matters.  First, Ed McGaa -- who is running against Wellstone on the Green ticket -- and I have several things in common beyond our Native American ethnicity.  I do know Ed McGaa to be a very honorable, sharp, thoughtful and courageous person.

On the other hand, were I in Minnesota -- as several of our family members presently are, BTW -- I would vote for Wellstone. [He is one of the few Democrats with whom I feel considerable empathy. I feel none, of course, with any Republicans.]  And Eldri and I will be making a contribution to his campaign -- as we have on other occasions.  Although Wellstone was disappointing in the crucible of last fall, he was -- as I noted, I believe, last summer in an ASDnet discussion -- consistently responsive and helpful to many of our social justice endeavors -- even though we contacted him from out-of-state [very much from North Dakota and occasionally from Idaho].

Yours - Hunter Gray  [ Hunterbear ]

I'm so sorry to see another good man targeted because he is not PURE enough.  Losing Wellstone will be a great loss and hand over the country entirely to the Republican conservatives.  Surely that is not the Green's intention.
